Guatemala has captured 16 alleged members of the Zetas, a Mexico-based drug gang, who are accused of the murder of a public prosecutor.
The mutilated body of Guatemalan prosecutor Allan Stowlinsky Vidaurre was found in Coban, Alta Verapaz, on May 24. He had been involved in the arrest of Hugo Alvaro Gomez Vasquez, alias “Comandante Bruja,” a suspected Zetas commander.
The 16 alleged gang members were also apprehended in Coban. According to authorities, who originally listed 15 arrestees, eight were Guatemalan, four were Mexican, two were Honduran and one Nicaraguan.
Guatemala’s attorney general said that the group was linked to the massacre of 27 laborers on a farm in the north of the country in May.
