In our February 22 Facebook Live session, Senior Investigator Héctor Silva Ávalos and Senior Editor Mike LaSusa discussed the criminal infiltration of El Salvador’s politics ahead of legislative and municipal elections scheduled for March 4.

Silva and LaSusa talked about how gangs and other types of criminal groups have managed to infiltrate El Salvador’s political system, and how they negotiate with candidates by trading electoral support for various types of benefits.

They also discussed what steps are being taken by Salvadoran authorities to address the issue of criminal infiltration of politics, and whether those efforts have been forceful enough.
