The United Nations expressed concern about the murders of prosecutors in Guatemala and Honduras less than a week apart, in attacks attributed to organized crime.

A spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) warned that “We are extremely concerned about an apparent new trend of targeting public prosecutors in Central America, apparently by organized crime groups.”

On May 28 Raul Reyes Carbajal, a public prosecutor in Honduras, was gunned down on his way home from work by a group of armed men. According to the UN, Reyes previously worked for a unit that specialized in prosecuting organized crime.

On May 24 Allan Stowlinsky Vidaurre, a Guatemalan prosecutor investigating a massacre linked to the Zetas drug gang, was found dead and mutilated in north of the country.

In the past three years approximately 60 lawyers have been murdered in Honduras, reports El Heraldo.
