The profits from these endeavors are put back into the core project: monitoring all aspects of organized crime in the region and publishing the results of these investigations on its all-purpose website.
InSight researchers have investigative experience in almost every country in Latin America, and are able to call upon networks of journalists, academics, NGOs and contacts within governments and security forces. In Colombia, where InSight has its largest investigative team, research has been carried out in 28 of the country’s 32 departments.
InSight has produced risk assessments, academic studies, and field research to feed investigative projects. Projects range from days to months. Our strength is field research and clear, concise reports. only by walking and talking to the people on the ground can you build an accurate picture.
InSight also does workshops for journalists and non-governmental organizations in the region. The trainings vary but can include the following topics, depending on the needs of the client:
- In-depth trainings for both journalists and civil society organizations in investigating organized crime, including working directly with the trainees on projects of their choosing at their place of work, in the field and/or remotely. This includes taking them step-by-step through the process of deciding on a topic, doing the pre-investigation, doing the actual investigation (what do to first, second, third, and so forth), and how to think through the writing and display of this topic.
- Trainings in how to develop these stories in written, graphic, and/or audiovisual form in order to maximize the use of online platforms to extend the life and reach of the project (into academic, policymaking circles, etc.). This includes the possibility of training them how to use online resources such as Google maps, Dipity timelines, Picasa slideshows, Skype video interviews, and other, low-cost methods of maximizing the impact of their reporting over a long period of time.
- Trainings in how to maximize the reach of these projects via partnerships with other organizations (civil society organizations with media and vice-versa) and through the use of social media, "guerrilla" marketing, etc.
- How to find and create workable partnerships with various types of organizations in order to maximize use of resources and reach of the project. This part could include joint-training sessions with civil society organizations and media in the same room, which can lead to interesting partnerships and ideas.
- How to minimize risk for reporters, editors, investigators and subjects of the stories. This includes instructions on how to create protocols for traveling, doing interviews, transferring data over the internet, etc.
